Training German Shepherds

Training German Shepherds ensures that your GSD achieves the full potential this breed is known for. The German Shepherd breed is known as one that is loving and loyal, and is considered by most as one of the top dog breeds when it comes to intelligence.

As pets, German Shepherds are a great addition to any household. Since this breed is used in law enforcement, you not only get a cuddly, furry animal running around the house, you also get your own security officer. This versatility is what makes this breed endearing to its human family.

Training German Shepherds

Contrary to what most think, this dog breed is not aggressive, but they will fiercely defend their territory and those that they deem as part of their pack. This pack includes their immediate human family and those that are familiar to them.

As GSD’s are a big dog breed, an unwanted attack can become a huge problem for its owner. By training your German Shepherd, you further increase your control over this big dog breed.

With basic obedience training, you gain more authority over your pet’s actions, thus reducing the chances of unwanted attacks.

With all things said, I will give you three German Shepherd training tips and tricks that can assist you in transforming your GSD into a more obedient one.

Training German Shepherds How To Sit:

This is the foundation of all dog tricks. As dog training is done in stages, your dog needs to master this trick first as to make the whole training process run smoothly.

1-Stand directly in front of your GSD.
2-Using a treat, place your hand just above the nose of your dog.
3-Slowly move your hand in the direction of your dogs behind.
4-While doing this, give the command “sit” in a loud firm tone.
5-Once your dog reaches a sitting position, shower him or her with praises and a yummy treat.
6-Repeat process until it becomes second nature for your dog to react to the command.

Training German Shepherds How To Come:

1-With treat in hand, command your dog to sit.
2-Move a few steps away from your dog, and then face towards him or her.
3-With treat in hand, give the command “come” in a loud firm tone.
4-If your dog does what it is told, shower him or her with praises and a yummy treat.
5-Repeat process until it becomes second nature for your dog to react to the command.

Training German Shepherds How To Heel:

1-Sit your dog beside you, preferably on your left, and give the command to sit.
2-Hold the leash loosely so that there would be little slack between you and your dog.
3-With a treat in front of you dog, slowly move forward starting with your left foot.
4-Simultaneously give the “heel” command in a loud firm tone.
5-If your dog does not move at the same pace as you, gently tug on the leash.
6-If your dog does what it is told, shower him or her with praises and a yummy treat.
7-Repeat process until it becomes second nature for your dog to react to the command.

Though training German Shepherds can be done successfully regardless of its age, it is advised to train German Shepherd puppies before they develop bad habits. Training a more mature dog that has developed bad habits will only lengthen the whole process.
